The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 is a foldable smartphone with a 7.6-inch screen which is almost tablet-sized.
The rivalry between Samsung and Apple fascinates us so much that we sometimes overlook how different they are. Apple is the company that is rather a bit too cautious in releasing something new for their customers, while Samsung may be pushy when it comes to introducing new features and rolling them out, sometimes even when they are not really viable yet. Both strategies have their advantages, and both companies benefit from following their own different paths.
Samsung seems well positioned to capitalize this year on its four-year effort to make the foldable form factor more accessible to “ordinary” people with the new Fold 4 and Flip 4.
Below you can read what we at “Operation Men” think of this new addition from Samsung!
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4
At first glance, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 does not appear to have changed much. However, if you hold it for a few minutes, you will discover that Samsung has successfully cut a few millimeters off the design and made this phone lighter. The hinge, which previously confused tech companies, is now somewhat smaller. Samsung has left the design of the phone largely untouched, with the exception of the fact that the device is thus more recessed in the frame and therefore feels better in the hand.
But as Samsung has shown, design is not always limited to the physical. There is now a drawer full of apps on each screen, so you can easily switch to other apps or drag up an app you want to multitask with. This is the kind of thinking that can only be done on a big screen, and it is this kind of concept that takes the product to a whole new level. This is an entirely new UI that was probably created specifically for the unfolded screen on the Fold 4. It’s something that hasn’t even been seen on Android tablets before, and Samsung might have something very nice in the pipeline with this.
Multitask king
The enhanced ability to multitask takes this phone to a whole new level. Split-screens are what give the Fold its punch, while for the Note series the S-Pen was its superpower.
The uses are endless when you have so much space and versatility. Within seconds, for example, you’ve switched from reading an email to opening a Google Sheet on the side to check some numbers, all while following the latest developments at “Operation Men,” or watching one of your favorite YouTube channels.
This is all possible because the device is equipped with the best Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chip, which helps to keep the device cool even under heavy workloads. The only time you can’t multitask is when you’re gaming, but that’s not really a limitation on the processor in this situation either.
The camera
Samsung has always been a leader in camera technology, and they continue to push the boundaries with their latest devices. Early users of Samsung products may have been willing to take an undersized camera for granted, but as Samsung’s customer base has grown, more and more people expect high-end features across the board. Thanks to the Fold 4’s 50MP primary camera, which as far as we’re concerned can compete with other Samsung flagship cameras, Samsung also hits the mark in this area with this device.
In fact, the Fold 4 could also attract the “filmmaker” segment, as its powerful 4K recording capabilities offer better multitasking, which is essential for video editing.
However, if there is one thing that users will probably not be so unhappy about, it is the “in-display” selfie camera. The photos are too grainy to use in low light. It’s a good thing instead that you can still use the rear camera in a variety of ways for selfies.
Although Samsung has not improved the screen quality, it compensates users by providing more screen space in the same frame through a better screen-to-body ratio. Also, this phone is again compatible with the S-Pen stylus.
Considerations
Although the Fold 4, despite its higher price, is becoming more of a mass-market product as it becomes more popular, there are a few features that set it apart from other phones, especially in terms of its use and maintenance.
- First, this is not a phone you give to your kids to keep them busy during, say, a long flight. This is actually a phone that you better not want near your children.
- It’s a phone that makes you feel like you should have put your tuxedo or overcoat back on, because its size makes it feel so awkward in both your pants and shirt pockets.
- If you don’t have a case for your phone, you’ll be extra careful where you put it, for fear of damaging the device.
So let’s be clear: this is still a phone that requires your attention and care.
The interface on the front screen has not changed, which may be an area for further development in the next version. The fold is still there, almost as a kind of reminder that this is a foldable screen, but pulls back a little further into the fold each year.
So is the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 worth buying?
Yes, if you have the financial means most certainly do. Because this is probably the best phone on the market right now, one that lets you announce your arrival and finish your work before you arrive. This is a business phone, a showpiece phone and an absolute “head turner”. And this is a phone that can obviously be used like any other. In short, he is just wonderful, but he expects you to give him affection and proper attention.
