Unless you opt for the SVR version, most people won’t give the Jaguar F-Pace a second look. It is an average crossover SUV lost in the sea of luxury crossovers.
Unveiled in 2018, the F-Pace SVR is the sportiest version of Jaguar’s largest crossover. It has a 550-hp supercharged V8 engine from the F-Type R and Range Rover Sport SVR, making it both loud and incredibly fast. It also has gigantic brakes, all-wheel drive, a rear electric limited slip differential and more aggressive suspension characteristics. With a starting price of around €165,000, it’s a pretty hefty package for a sporty crossover.
The F-Pace SVR is a joy to drive. The advanced hardware translates exceptionally well to the road, making it a great choice for anyone looking for an exhilarating riding experience.
The F-Pace drives confidently through the rain, even with winter tires mounted, and it’s a pleasure to drive the 4,800-pound SUV through corners. It’s exhilarating to tear through the gears with the eight-speed automatic and rev the 5.0-liter V-8 to 6,500 rpm. The V8 in its loud mode makes a crackling sound that you either love, or loathe, when you press the gas pedal (which makes it almost a hilarious experience). Consider it an embarrassing pleasure. Like putting the 0-60 time to the test in 3.8 seconds on highway ramps.
550 hp in the city is quite excessive and unnecessary. The slightest touch of the pedal is already shooting you off to speeds that violate the law. With some practice you will learn to control it better. Still, the V-8’s torque won’t make it any less addictive.
The SVR is not only a powerful crossover, but it is also more agile than you might think. Despite its relatively unremarkable egg-shaped body, the SVR has huge, electrically assisted brakes that feel fantastic and are perfect for city driving. The steering is direct, making it easy to maneuver in tight spaces. Fine for use in the city, then.
The only potential drawback is that the suspension, designed for peak performance, can produce a bumpy ride on ordinary city roads full of potholes. If you often drive on rough roads, it can feel quite jerky.
The interior of the F-Pace is a wonderful place to spend time, with the hip-massaging performance seats keeping you in place as you steer through sharp turns. The interior of this “truck” is a good mix of performance, luxury and convenience.
Jaguar Land Rover’s 11.4-inch touchscreen is exceptionally beautiful and user-friendly. It responds much faster than the older model and is a huge improvement. The F-Pace accommodates three adults and a child with ease, as might be expected from a crossover SUV.
The F-Pace SVR is not just another anonymous lugger – it is much more than that. It’s a fantastic, sporty all-rounder that clearly deserves the amiable supercharged V-8. With its added functionality and its similarity to other Sport Utility Vehicles on the market, the F-Pace SVR offers one of the most enjoyable performance experiences possible in this genre.
