The Amazfit T-Rex 2 is a waterproof smartwatch with 24 days of battery life and military-grade durability.
Here’s our performance review of this beautiful smartwatch.
The clock
Finding a smartwatch that can take a beating and has features to keep you going on those trips will cost you more money. Amazfit’s T-Rex 2 is one such fitness watch with military-level durability, but without going broke. This is a rugged smartwatch designed for use in nature.
Here is my assessment of the watch, and whether or not it is right for you.
What’s in it?
The T-Rex 2 is clearly designed for people who love the outdoors and aren’t afraid to get a little dirty. It includes dual-band GPS capabilities and support for five satellite positioning. According to Amazfit, this will hold up in extremely chilly conditions – something we obviously didn’t get a chance to test here towards the end of summer. It also has military-grade toughness, 10 ATM water resistance, and a 24-day battery life, according to the manufacturer.
It also has various fitness and health monitoring functions, such as daily steps. It also tracks your heart rate and blood oxygen levels.
What’s so good about it then?
The design of the watch is very similar to older Casio watches or some Garmin watches, which I appreciate because it doesn’t look cheap. The black watch has red accents on the dial (at least this version) and four buttons – two to control the movement up or down, one as a back button, and another that provides access to all workout modes.
This is an Always On AMOLED touchscreen device with a diameter of 1.39 inches. This is a high-resolution screen with excellent visibility. However, the watch is bulky and weighs 67 grams, making it unsuitable for people with small narrow wrists.
The watch is quick and easy to use, which of course is always a plus. The compass and barometer are also great features, as is the sleep tracker which is very accurate. However, this watch is too bulky to wear comfortably when you go to bed at night.
The Zepp Health app also has the ability to display notifications from your phone. Just make sure the Zepp Health app is set up properly with notifications enabled when you get the watch. The app has many personalization options, so you can choose which app notifications you want to see on the watch instead of being flooded with irrelevant notifications.
The Zepp app offers very many customization options on this particular aspect. If you don’t prefer constant distracting notifications on your smartwatch, this form of customization is very useful.
If you’re looking for a solid fitness watch, the T-Rex 2 excels. It has more than 150 sports modes and is suitable for the most dedicated fitness fan. What’s great about the strength training tracking feature is that you can do sets while you train, which should be handy when switching exercises. The step count is also quite accurate. For example, when traveling in a vehicle, you won’t notice significant fluctuations in the step count, which can be a problem on some devices.
Finally, the battery life is fantastic. Amazfit claims a battery life of 24 days, and even with frequent use, you should be able to get out at least two weeks. Do keep in mind that you have turned off notifications and don’t really use the GPS function all the time, which of course drains the battery faster. According to Garmin, battery life is limited to 50 hours when continuous GPS tracking is used.
What’s less?
The only objection to this watch, perhaps, is the size. After a certain point, it can become uncomfortable and tiring to wear. In addition, the band is not your cup of tea, as it is not very sturdy or well made. The watch also doesn’t exactly have the appealing aesthetic that other smartwatches on the market have, but it wasn’t designed for that either. This watch was created with people in mind who often live an active lifestyle outdoors.
And? Is the clock worth considering?
The T-Rex 2 is a good choice if you are looking for a cool smartwatch at a very reasonable price. It has a number of useful features and works well with fitness, as well as durability that will serve you well. Another important advantage is the battery life. This smartwatch just might not be ideal for someone who wants it to complement their daily wardrobe.
